The Wisconsin Family Business of the Year awards program is sponsored by Smith & Gesteland, a CPA firm, First Business Bank, and the Whyte, Hirschboeck, Dudek law firm.

According to Neil Fauerbach of Smith & Gesterland, “We created this awards program 12 years ago to celebrate the accomplishments and the impact that family-owned businesses have on our communities.  Since then, we’ve presented 79 awards to deserving family-owned businesses including auto dealers, food manufacturers, grocery stores, plumbers, restaurants, and construction companies. These are businesses that help to make Wisconsin unique through all of their wonderful contributions to their communities, their industries, and the economy.”

To be considered for an award, each company honored must go through a nomination process. Nominations are reviewed in-depth by a panel of judges composed of independent business leaders. The judges consider the family business’ contribution to its community and industry, its positive links between family and business, and innovative practices it may use.

In the United States, there are more than 10 million family businesses, from “mom and pop” stores to Fortune 500 companies. Their economic influence is enormous, producing an estimated 50 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product and paying 65 percent of all wages. The success of family businesses is also demonstrated in the stock market. An analysis of publicly held, family-owned businesses reveals that they significantly outperform the stock market.
